ICRC Organises International Humanitarian Law Training Workshop for LibMAC Staff
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) organised a three-day training workshop on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) from 20 to 22 September 2026 for a number of staff members of the Libyan Mine Action Centre LibMAC).
The workshop strengthened participants’ understanding of the fundamental principles and rules of IHL, including the rules governing the conduct of hostilities and the protection afforded to persons and objects affected by armed conflicts.
A session was also dedicated to key international treaties that prohibit or restrict the use of certain types of weapons, as well as the importance of implementing relevant international obligations at the national level. Discussions also covered the role of LibMAC in supporting the implementation of IHL and reducing the humanitarian impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW).
The workshop also addressed key contemporary challenges facing IHL, with a focus on emerging weapons and technologies, including autonomous weapon systems, artificial intelligence, and cyber operations, as well as the legal and humanitarian challenges they present.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants were presented with certificates of attendance in recognition of their participation and completion of the training programme.
Through discussions and practical exercises, the workshop helped strengthen participants’ understanding of IHL and its relevance to mine action and explosive remnants of war.
