As part of ongoing collaboration between national and international stakeholders, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), in coordination with the Libyan Mine Action Centre (LibMAC), organized a specialized workshop focused on reviewing and developing Libya’s National Mine Action Standards.
Venue and Dates:
The workshop was held at the Golden Carthage Hotel in Tunis, Tunisia, over five days—from Monday, June 30 to Friday, July 4, 2025—with active participation and high-level engagement from relevant entities.

A total of eighteen representatives took part in the workshop, including:
- Libyan Mine Action Centre (LibMAC)
- Ministry of Defense
- United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS)
- Military Engineering Department
- Criminal Investigation Agency
- National Safety Authority
- International and national organizations operating within the Libyan Mine Action Programme, including:
- DCA
- Halo Trust
- Free Fields Foundation (3F)
- Libyan Peace Organization (LPO)
- Trusted Aid for Development (TAD)
Workshop Objective:
The workshop aimed to clarify the principles and mechanisms necessary for reviewing and updating the current Libyan National Mine Action Standards, originally developed in 2015 by UNSMIL’s Mine Action Section. The existing standards consist of 22 chapters and 18 related annexes. Discussions focused on aligning these standards with the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), while introducing new chapters that reflect the priorities and strategic direction of the Libyan Mine Action Programme.
Toward More Integrated and Responsive Standards:
This workshop marked a significant step toward strengthening technical governance in Libya’s mine action sector. It reaffirmed the commitment of national and international partners to fostering a safe and effective operational environment, grounded in best practices and global standards.
