In cooperation with the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), the activities of the consultation workshop aimed at developing a comprehensive national strategy for mine action in Libya were launched today at the Corinthia Hotel. This workshop comes as part of the national efforts made to deal with the major challenges facing the country due to the spread of mines and war remnants, which pose a direct threat to the lives of citizens and an obstacle to the process of reconstruction and development.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the relevant government agencies, civil society organizations, international experts in the field of mine clearance, in addition to representatives of supporting international organizations. The sessions aimed to identify national priorities, develop an integrated framework to enhance efforts aimed at clearing areas contaminated by mines, provide the necessary support to those affected, and increase community awareness of the dangers of this scourge.
In his opening remarks, the Director of the Libyan Mine Action Centre stressed the importance of this strategy as a fundamental step towards achieving security and stability in Libya, noting that “mines are not just a humanitarian crisis, but also an obstacle to economic and social development.” He added that “this workshop represents an opportunity to enhance cooperation between all concerned parties, and to develop a clear and implementable action plan.”
For its part, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining praised the Libyan efforts in this field, stressing its continued support for national efforts aimed at eliminating the dangers of mines. The workshop also reviewed successful international experiences in the field of mine clearance, which can be used in the Libyan context.
The workshop is scheduled to conclude its work tomorrow by issuing practical recommendations and proposals that will form the basis for developing the national strategy, which will be adopted as a reference for all future efforts in this field.
